Lac (Kerria lacca) is a scale insect known from antiquity throughout India, SE Asia, Nepal and China. The female insects infest many species of trees and secrete a hard resinous coating that envelopes their body and twig of the tree. This is known as sticklac and is collected and processed to make shellac or varnish to protect wood furniture. The Earthues lac extract is produced as a byproduct of the shellac industry and is a very strong red dye.
