This is how it all began: Michele Wipplinger of Seattle, Washington began sharing her love of color and natural dyes when she returned in 1979 from her year-long journey with her husband, Andro Wipplinger, and their two-year old son to Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, where she interacted with and observed the natural dye practices still employed by the indigenous people of those countries in the fabrication of their handwoven clothing. Michele immediately began teaching natural dyeing workshops around the USA and in the basement of her Seattle home. In 1994 Michele opened her Earthues studio in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood and began selling natural dyes and natural dye extracts to her students and several of the remaining textile dye houses in the USA.
Michele and Andro closed the Ballard studio in 2014 due to Michele’s dementia and continued to operate the natural dye portion of the business from their home. Michele passed away in February 2020. Andro and his youngest son, Misha, continue to operate Earthues from their shared home in Seattle.

Earthues offers the following traditional natural dye extracts in a powdered form or concentrated liquid. Our natural colorations are easy to use and provide healthful, inspired options for a variety of creative applications. The dyes are grown, harvested, and extracted with the environment in mind.
Earthues also carries a line of raw materials whenever practical because they contain more colorants than the main compound that is normally contained in an extract and yield subtly different colors. Extraction instructions are available upon request.
