Chestnut Extract comes from the bark and heartwood of the Chestnut tree (Costanea sativa or Sweet Chestnut) that is native to Italy and Southern France and grows throughout Europe. It contains 70% tannic acid and is pH 4.6 in a water solution. It used extensively in the natural leather tanning industry. The Earthues extract is a subtle dye and is used primarily as a base for other colors.

An iron glaze on silk and cotton will produce warm grays
A Chestnut base over-dyed with indigo will produce a quackable Mallard Green.
