Aluminum Acetate is a very fine, white powder used for mordanting cellulose and bast fibers. Using aluminum acetate for cellulose fibers first came to our attention in J.N. Liles' 1990 book, The Art and Craft of Natural Dyeing. At that time, aluminum acetate was not commercially available and Mr. Liles had to formulate his own by adding sodium acetate to aluminum potassium sulfate.

The Earthues product is a commercially available, dibasic aluminum acetate (Al(OH)₂CH₃CO₂) that has been stabilized with boric acid to improve shelf life. 5% wog is used at 100F for mordanting cellulose following a vigorous scour.
